South Vietnam is mostly known
for its famous city, Ho Chi Minh, formerly called Saigon. Tours in this region
are mostly concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta area.
Ho Chi Minh City is the new official name for Saigon since 1975.
It is by far the largest city in Vietnam and the economic engine of the
country. HCM is now a bustling and vibrant city where tradition meets
modernity. With more than 7 million inhabitants spread over 16 urban
districts, the city’s shape is constantly changing and in full contrast
with the street stalls next to fancy restaurants and designer boutiques.
One of the city’s links to the past is Cholon, Saigon’s Chinatown, where
many majestic temples and pagodas can be found. Annexed by the French in
1859, one of the most important remains of this period is undeniably
Notre-Dame Cathedral, built between 1877 and 1883.
Some
of the city’s highlights are the Jade Emperor’s Pagoda, the Giac Lam
Pagoda, Ben Thanh market, the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants
Museum, etc.
Mekong Delta, often called the rice basket of
Vietnam has a surface of more than 67,000 square kilometers and a
population of 15 million people (one of the most populated of Vietnam).
From its source in Tibet, the Mekong flows through 6 countries to split up
in 9 tributaries and end its race in the South China Sea. Its length
is about 4,500 kilometers.
The
plains in the delta are frequently flooded due to the rise of the river
and there is also a big network of canals. Thus, the most common and
convenient way of transport is by boat. The canals are like the veins of
the delta: almost everything takes place on the water: floating markets,
cargos carrying humans, vegetables, fruits, etc.
A
